Mary’s Approach to Therapy

My approach to therapy comes from wisdom learned from both nature and neuroscience, because both reveal universal truths of what it means to be human. Much as a tree relies on many roots to bring it nutrients from the ground, and as the brain requires numerous, winding neural pathways to feel and express people need many different sources of support to thrive in the world. Sometimes when we are hurt or struggling we have roots that are very strong and other less developed. Therapy is part of the healing process that allows us to fully bloom. Addressing the root issues and expanding our root system allows us to develop and maintain a strong foundation to support our dreams and desires. Through healing, we learn to live as whole, thriving human beings.

I am a Certified Clinical Trauma Therapist and I deeply believe in creating spaces that are trauma informed. What this means is I prioritize safety (both physical and psychological). I center trustworthiness and transparency in every session. I value the lived experience of people. I view each session as a collaborative space where we will acknowledge power differentials and work towards leveling out those power differences. We will push your comfort zone because that is where growth happens, and it will be at your pace and with your consent.

I also actively acknowledge and address how institutional and cultural factors impact individual mental health. We will work together to conceptualize your challenges from this holistic framework that will further support moving out of the belief that “I am the problem” to a more balanced understanding that your body and mind are trying to keep you safe in a very unhealthy world. This shift of focus is central to another framework I use called the Liberation Health Model. It helps to hold the issues you are facing in the context of your personal challenges and strengths, alongside the cultural and institutional factors that impact health and wellbeing to varying degrees.

Let’s tend your roots in whatever soil they may lay.

I help clients connect with, learn from, and trust their bodies. Whether you struggle with accessing your body's wisdom and intuition due to depression, trauma, or living in a world that teaches us to hate ourselves, I would love to work with you.
